Description
This hand-carved soapstone hippopotamus rests in a low, swimming or flopped pose with a rounded muzzle, small ears, tucked legs, and a wonderfully relaxed expression. Each available hippo is finished in its own color and painted or incised pattern, so one design will be selected for you from the current assortment. The smooth, weighty stone form makes a playful accent for a desk, shelf, animal collection, or safari-inspired room and can also serve as a decorative paperweight.
Soapstone is a talc-rich metamorphic rock traditionally associated in metaphysical practice with calm, grounding, emotional balance, adaptability during change, and clear or creative thought. Hippopotamus imagery adds symbolism of strength, protection, emotional depth, confidence, and the balance between rest and decisive action. Together, these associations make the carving a meaningful reminder of quiet power. Each hippo is made from locally quarried Kisii soapstone by a Kenyan fair-trade artisan cooperative whose work supports living wages, children's education, and an orphanage.
